How to Brainwash Using Affirmations

By: Crystal Manning

Let's dive right in with a definition.

brain·wash
/ˈbrānˌwôSH,ˈbrānˌwäSH/
verb

To make (someone) adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible pressure.
"The organization could brainwash young people."
synonyms: indoctrinate, condition, re-educate, persuade,
propagandize, influence, inculcate, drill; pressurize
"They have been brainwashed into conformity and subservience."

Brainwashing has taken on a negative connotation over the years; however, most people can benefit from the process of brainwashing. Years of living normal lives allows for a substantial amount of information being absorbed into your brain. Both consciously and subconsciously, information flows freely into your mind and attaches to your hippocampus. At any given moment something can trigger a recall of the stored information. The accessed information can be negative or positive, it all depends on the motive of the recall. This is where brainwashing comes in handy.

Brainwashing is defined as the act of making someone adopt radically different beliefs by using systematic and often forcible pressure. If, every time you hear your alarm sound, you become depressed because you have to get ready for work or school it is because you do not have a positive outlook on work or school. This means the information you store in your mind about work or school is negative and those thoughts negatively manifest themselves, thus affecting your mood and attitude.

What if you could change your stored thoughts and in doing so change what you recall?

Well, you can! You can systematically and forcibly brainwash yourself and even people around you.

Your brain has many functions, with thinking on the top of the list. However, you cannot allow your brain to out-think you. You must control the information you store, and you must control the information you recall. This can be done by replacing the currently stored thoughts with positive thoughts, or in other words positive affirmations.

A positive affirmation is simply a positive statement that helps you challenge negative thoughts.

How to Use Affirmations: Step by Step

Step 1: Pinpoint the negative thought that needs changing.

This is the easiest step. When you find your mind drifting to a self-hate statement like "I am so fat" note that negative thought. Don't brush it aside or laugh it off. That negative statement is the culprit.

Step 2: Recognize the trigger for this thought.

Think about what triggered this thought. Were you trying on old clothes? Looking in the mirror? Admiring an Instagram post of a slim influencer? Pay attention to what caused your brain to recall this negative thought.

Step 3: Replace the negative thought with a positive one.

So instead of a statement like "I am so fat" try a better fitting, positive statement like "I am so beautiful."

Step 4: Repeat the positive thought often, especially when you face a trigger.

If you are trying to change a thought that embedded itself in your mind for the past several months or even years, you have to be purposeful in your pursuit to change this thought. Next time you are looking in the mirror, trying on clothes or scrolling through Instagram make sure you focus on your positive thought.

Step 5: Write your positive thought.

That’s right put pen to paper. Write it out in black and white (or pink and green or orange and blue or whatever floats your boat). Furthermore, post it in the places that you meet your triggers. Post your physical affirmations on your mirror; on your closet door; on your headboard.

Step 6: Believe your positive thought.

You must believe these new thoughts are the truth (because they are). Your brain has tricked you into thinking the negative thoughts are truth, but they are just learned thoughts that have become easy to remember. In time, after focusing on the previous steps, your new thoughts will become easy to remember and replace your false thinking with healthy truth.

Step 7: Repeat!

Understand that just because you have learned to control your negative thoughts does not mean new negativity cannot creep in. With the tool of positive affirmation, you will be able to combat the negativity quickly and precisely.

This amazing 7 step process is used to change the negative thinking of others too. Try it on your friends and family. The world does a wonderful job of telling us we aren't good enough. Imagine the benefit of pouring positivity into your loved ones. Imagine the effect of constantly telling your children they are smart or creative. Imagine them believing it and living in their truth, the truth you taught them. The world would be an amazing place. Go on and try it out! Isn't about time you clean up your brain?

Pro Tip: Affirmations can be done while operating heavy machinery, driving a motor vehicle or chewing gum.
